Chameleon III - preparing

I am planning to do more paintings in my chameleon series.

Here are my first sketches. I draw a smaller drawing freehand. This means I look at ref-photos, but only use my eyes as measure tools.

When I find the composition is okay, I draw the larger drawing freehand on watercolor paper.

I don't scale up my smaller drawing, as I sometimes do with other drawings. That's because in this series, I want the pencilststrokes very autentich and lively. They will be seen in the finished painting too. If you scale up, and redraw line upon line, the strokes will be more static. Fine in many cases, but not here.

Leather and Pearls

Well, finally I can post again.

Work, ordinary life and some illness really took over my time for this past month.

I've been working on this piece "Leather and Pearls" for about 22 hours.

It's a rather small piece; approx. 13 x 18 cm. All colored pencils with the use of zest-it and splender too.
I am not used to doing still-lifes, but wanted to challenge myself. The leather and larger pearls was definitly the funniest part.
I liked the 2 different textures against each other, and I also found a symbolic quality in the motif..

Working

I am working on a colored pencil drawing, but as it is for a show, I won't be posting untill finished.
It is a still-life which is very rare for me to do, so I have my challenges with it.

Trying out a landscape

Landscapes has been on my "art-to-do wishing list" for a long time. Never really got around to it. Untill now. I couldn't resist placing some animals, though. 2 arctic wolves and 2 deers.
"Wolf-crossing country" (not: wolf crossing country) is in pastels and approx. 17 x 45 cm.
I wanted to show majestic snow-covered mountains and a landscape with very open spaces. And then the arctic wolves that live in these surroundings.

Realism, Photorealism and Hyperrealism

I knew about realism and photorealism in drawing and painting.

I have just heard about hyperrealism - sorry, if I am falling behind ;) - and I found the gallery of this guy - Denis Peterson. Its just amazing, how can he paint like that?!
Also take a look at this racehorse, you do read twice, to be sure he did not say it is a photo. Nope: gouache and watercolor...

Anyway, I think I'll stick to realism, then try to reach photorealism in time - once in a while. The hyperrealism looks like aiming too high in my vision

Do you love colored pencil art?

Do you enjoy working with colored pencils?
Do you wanna learn more about creating art with colored pencils?
Do you wanna mingle with likeminded?

Why not join in with fellow artists, some of them top cp artists - learn from their lessons, get information about many aspects of working in cp, follow in depth critiques, showcase your own cp-art, read stories of other artists, get workshop schedules (great cp-artist teachers) and participate in 2 yearly shows/competitions?

That's some of the nice things you'll get from Ann Kullbergs on-line magazine "From my perspective".
I'm on my 5.th year as subscriber and I wouldn't miss it. The subscribtion has a very fair price - and includes free entry to the shows.

If you already work with cp's you cannot have missed Ann Kullbergs name. Her books are famous - and if you do human portraits - they are a must have!

Take a visit to annkullberg.com - for all things colored pencil. You can subscribe from there and Ann offers wonderful cp-kits, prismacolor color pencils, drawingtools, Cd's etc. etc. Also take a look at the CP Central - a site Ann created with lots of important links.

If you love colored pencils - you gotta come around!

He's my favorite - wip - finished

Here is the finished oilpastel painting "He's my favorite".

40 x 50 cm on Canson Mi-tentes.

The composition is a mix from references, the wonderful Jutland horse, I saw at an agricultural-fair this summer. The small girl is my daughter.

My intention was to create a painting with strong contrasts, the contrast of size between the horse and the girl, and the contrast of colors, orange/reds against green.
I also wanted to emphazise the connection between animal and child in a warm and sweet manner.
The title referring to the childs feelings about her familys wonderful Jutland horse.

(This is a photo and the colors are slightly dulled compared to the original. My scan got way too red, so this is better).

Ocelot Family

Well, I've been really busy working on the Ocelot painting. Here are the finished work. It is 33 x 39 cm.
The motif is composed with different photoreferences from zoo.
My intention was to create a painting of this small ocelot family from the Amazons, showing them in a peaceful scenery, with the kittens waiting for their mother to wake up.

Ocelot Family

I realize it is 2 weeks since my last "work" post.

I have been very busy participainting in a class, nothing to do with art though. Even it is very interesting, I really long for more time at my drawingtable again. It is frustrating how time is occupied with other things. How I envy you, that make a living from your art or simply have the hours of the day to draw and paint ;)

Anyway, my oilpastel painting "He's my Favorite" is on hold, as I want to try to get a dry pastel painting ready for a competition.

Here you see a bit of the painting called "Ocelot Family". Soft, hard and pastelpencils on Clairfontaine pastelmat. It is my first pastelpainting on this support, and I like it very much.

Memberships of international artsocieties

(Arabian Pride)

This is not a new painting, but just to indicate that I have joined the Pastel Guild of Europe. I enjoy pastels very much and hope to work even more with this media. I like both dry and oilpastels, the PGE is, as far as I've discovered, for the dry pastels (soft, hard, pencils).

I am a member of UKCPS, UK coloured pencils society. I like my coloured pencils very much, and the society offers a magazine, yahoo-groups and competitions.

Also for my interest in cp I subscribe to Ann Kullbergs on-line magazin: From my perspective.

I have a gallery at Mike Sibleys Starving Artist site, where I show different kinds of artwork.

The above societies requires a fee.

For forum activity I participate at ScribbleTalk, a forum for all kind of drawingmedia (not painting). Lots of interesting artwork and discussions goes on there.
Artpapa is another interesting place to visit.
For selling prints of my work, I have a gallery on Imagekind.
